“Thine eye diffused a quickening ray…”

I’ve often wondered about this line of one of Charles Wesley’s hymns. “Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.” Everything before and after makes perfect sense to me both in doctrinal and in personal experience except for the “quickening ray” that Christ is said to shoot from his eyes. Is this merely poetic language? Is this where Superman got the idea of heat rays from his eyes? Or is there something else to it? Well I believe I have discovered “the source” in a spiritual context which might interest some of you.
